Over of the last 12 months we have worked side-by-side in taking great strides towards making America a better place. I have held over 100 health care meetings and town halls and have been to all 137 towns in the district. I’m thankful for your input and support. I am proud to announce that I plan to vote YES on the President’s new Health Insurance Reform Bill. This is a truly historic vote for our nation; I want to make sure you hear exactly why. As most of you are aware, my original vote on the House health care bill was NO. This was not because I do not believe in health care reform or because I was making a stand against my party lines. I voted NO in November on the House health care bill, because it failed to take the steps necessary to fix the broken incentives in our health care system. The House bill placed unfair mandates on our small businesses that would have put a huge burden on our local economy. In the next few days, I will have the opportunity to vote on a new bill that I feel is fundamentally different; it will stop [...]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FROM KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND, UNITED STATES SENATOR FOR NEW YORK Tuesday, February 16, 2010 GILLIBRAND PUSHES TO INCLUDE PUBLIC OPTION IN HEALTH INSURANCE REFORM RECONCILIATION PACKAGE CBO Projections Show Public Option Could Yield Savings of At Least $25 billion Washington, D.C. – In the continued effort to pass health care reform that lowers costs and leads to higher quality care, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is working to pass health insurance reform that includes a public health insurance option under budget reconciliation rules. Senator Gillibrand joined Senators Michael Bennett (D-CO), Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) to write to Senate Majority Leader Reid highlighting findings from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) that said a public option could yield cost savings of at least $25 billion. Bennet also pointed to the fact that a public option would provide Americans with a low-cost alternative to private insurance and improve market competitiveness. In addition, the letter noted that there is substantial Senate precedent for using reconciliation to enact important health care policies, including the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), COBRA, and Medicare Advantage. “Too many people in Washington believe that just saying you are for health care reform is a [...]

Congressman Scott Murphy just signed on to a letter urging Harry Reid to consider including a public option. As the Senate continues to work on health reform legislation, we strongly urge you to consider including a public option. Here are the reasons for this request: 1) The public option is overwhelmingly popular. A December New York Times poll shows that, despite the attacks of recent months, the American public supports the public option 59% to 29%. And a recent Research 2000 poll found 82% of people who supported President Obama in 2008 and Scott Brown for Senate last week also support the public option. Only 32% of this key constituency is in favor of the current Senate bill – with more saying it “doesn’t go far enough” rather than it “goes too far.” Support for health care legislation started to fall as popular provisions like the public option were stripped out and affordability standards were watered down. The American people want us to fight for them and against special interests like the insurance industry, and it is our responsibility to show them that their voices are being heard. 2) The public option will save billions for taxpayers, speaking to the [...]

A message from our new Congressman: We did it! Just after I sent the last email I spoke with Representative Tedisco who conceded graciously. I am honored to have your support and I am eager to continue working with those whose support I have yet to gain. Again, thank you. On behalf of my family and my entire staff, thank you. You were there 3 months ago when we were over 20 points down, you were there on election night when our lead was narrow, and then for the past 3 weeks you fought for me and the voters of the 20th district who each deserved to have their votes counted. I am overwhelmed by your hard work and generosity and I look forward to working with you again in the future. Most sincerely, Scott Murphy

Gov. David Paterson appointed Democratic U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand on January 23 to fill New York’s vacant Senate seat, finally settling on a woman from a largely rural, eastern district of the state to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton. “I appreciate the opportunity that you have afforded me and the trust that you have placed in me,” she told Paterson. “I realize that for many New Yorkers, this is the first time you’ve heard my name and you don’t know much about me.”
